HAND-HOOKED RUGS

These rugs have been hooked by Colleen Wike. All are my designs or adaptations of my family's antique rugs. I have used quality burlap or linen as backing and both "as is and new wool fabric. Some cloth I overdye to suit my purposes.

  This is adapted from an old rug that my mother hooked when she was a girl. It lay beside my bed when I was a child and I stepped out onto it every morning. That rug has worn out now and I wanted to replace it and give the rabbits new life. It is hooked in browns and has a soft pale sky blue background.

  I hooked this one during the Christmas season. It features a reindeer flying over a snow-covered spruce tree. The border is a "hit & miss" pattern. The background is mottled blacks and the rug contains greens, browns, a bit of red and yellows.

  This is my second piece with a seashore theme. As a result of my location change, the coast and all it contains has a major impact on my daily life. This is an impressionistic interpretation of a ridge of rocks against water on a clear, cold day.

  Surf Scoters are large sea ducks that arrive each autumn. To my delight, they swim in tight military formations to and fro; diving like a row of dominoes when the urge strikes.
