A Bathroom Curse...

Have you ever heard of the bathroom renovation curse? Well it's a curse that came true for us, but I couldn't be happier!

Remember when I started with these drawings? Then I tried to be way too ambitious and complete the bathroom during the 8-week ORC (one room challenge). Well it obviously didn't happen in that timeline.

Eventually though, we got our life together and finished the space! But something curious happens when you finish a bathroom, and some people even call it a curse... You get the itch to move/sell your house. It didn't happen exactly like that for us, but eventually the curse did come!

It wasn't like we were looking to sell because we felt like the house was "ready", but sometimes, stars do align when you least expect it.

We live in a rural county in Oregon, one that is tight knit and homes are hard to find that aren't passed from one generation to another. I really love that tradition and I love the hard working farmers and families who have lived here for generations. It feels idealistic. And that's why I've wanted to put down stronger roots here myself.

But if we were going to stay here long term, I wanted a place where my kids could have animals and run off tether. I wanted a respite from the busy world. That's when I started driving the backroads. I get really curious about where all the roads lead and what types of properties are out there.

It was on one of these drives last spring that I came across a darling vintage house that looked possibly abandoned or vacant. I couldn't get it out of my head, so I decided to drive back one evening to see if there were lights on at the house or any cars in the driveway. And still nothing!

The wheels started turning and I kept dreaming of this place and how I could find out the ownership status. After sharing about it with a few close friends, who I didn't realize at the time had the perfect connections and advice for me, they helped me get the ball rolling. I ended up writing a snail mail letter of interest to the owners. They called me that very day!

And the rest, as they say, is history. We spent the summer months prepping our house to sell, we got a few offers, and we finally closed both sales by November.

The curse of the bathroom renovation lives on. But the buck... (err, curse) stops here, because our new house is one I hope to live in for the next 20 years.... and not with an unfinished bathroom. :)
